Approaching winter, a spring morning
A poem
Two of my poems were featured on Feed the Holy this past Friday, November 28. Both poems are spring poems, one of which “The Spring I Waited for the Dogwood to Bloom,” I’ve featured here at least once. The second poem was written in response to a haiku I received in the mail. When I first joined Substack in 2024, Andrew O. Dugas from the Daily Haiku Actual Postcard would send you a haiku if you sent him your address. So, of course, I sent him my address and I received the following haiku in the mail.
Later that spring, I wrote a short poem inspired by receiving a haiku postcard in the mail.
In the mail a spring morning blossoms a new haiku tap tap of hammers as I meditate crows skittering on the roof crossing a suspension bridge over a fast-running creek walking the stations of a life swimming hole bench waterfall
I treasure my haiku postcard and keep it on my altar where it sits next to family photos and Buddhas and other pieces that speak to me. Andrew’s Substack is still active so you can read the archives.
Thank you for reading and if you are new here, welcome! I’m traveling this coming week so I’m giving myself the option of skipping next Sunday’s post if needed but I will definitely be back in two weeks with a new poem.
If you would like to read more of my poetry, my book Gathering the Pieces of Days, celebrates the extraordinary in the ordinary moments of our days. You can get your copy from Unsolicited Press, Bookshop.org, or Asterism.
